Community Bonding and Week 1

The Google Summer of Code journey has officially begun and it already feels exciting.

We recently had our first introduction and community session with all the contributors and mentors. It was great getting to know the people who will be part of this journey for the next few months. Seeing contributors from different backgrounds, all excited to build and contribute to open source, made the whole experience feel very real.

Week 1 was mostly about getting started and settling in. I began setting up the plugin locally and understanding the overall development environment. There were moments of confusion, but slowly everything started making sense.

One of the best parts of this week was spending time talking with my mentor, Malek. We had some really amazing conversations about the project. He guided me a lot, answered my questions patiently, and gave me clarity on many things that initially felt overwhelming. More than just discussing tasks, we spent a lot of time talking through ideas, expectations and the direction of the project.

I think what stood out the most was how naturally we got on the same page. By the end of our conversations, it felt like we had built a really good understanding and connection, which made me even more excited to work on the project.

Plan for This Week and the Coming One

The plan for this week and the next is to focus on building a detailed architecture depth diagram to better understand and visualize the overall plugin structure and workflow. Alongside that, I will be actively working on the planned PRs, including plugin scaffold and Joplin API integration, note fetching with pagination, explicit link and tag extraction and the Cytoscape.js + fCoSE webview bundle.

Until the next update, Yugal Kaushik signing off.
