What do you do differently in Joplin in comparison to other note taking apps?

I’ve been using org-mode a lot during my time studying (I wrote my thesis with org-mode) but stopped now because I really need something with mobile support and Orgzly is just not enough.
Org-mode would be better for basically all my needs but the lack of mobile support just kills it for me.
I’m still using it at work however because of the time tracking and reporting features.

Please provide more details. What are you doing and how you use org-mode and what does that have to do with Roam?
Just very curious and a big fan of Roam.

Take a look at the roam replica created in orgmode. its called org-roam, and it is fantastic. when combined with org and emacs its actually way more extensiable and capable than Roam. and its in plain text. and wont ever cost money

I doubt it ever will be. The WYSIWYG editor was on the top in the list of feature requests, because people did not want to use markdown. Thus the new editor.

You probably mean something like a hybrid markdown/annotation editor WYSIWYM, which was also discussed a few times on the forum (slate.js). But hey, maybe I'm wrong, maybe there will be a 3rd editor option.

Form longer notes, yes. For small notes and quick edits, I just switch to the edit mode, but for longer notes where formatting matters, I use MarkText as an external editor.

I recently switch to Joplin from Boostnote because Boostnote doesn’t have mobile app so there’s no way for me to access them on my phone.

I found Joplin has far more features than Boostnote; especially sync, web-clipper and mobile app. I’m very impressed!

I always wanted to write a blog but a big lazy to setup and maintain server and software like wordpress. Also, to write a post, login into a portal and make changes is very cumbersome for me. I needed something for blog that can fuse with my day-to-day note taking process.
So I wrote script that converts Joplin notes to Hugo markdown format and hosted it on Github Pages with automatic. This way I don’t need to maintain any server or software and spend on server cost.

I had been using Zim on my Linux boxes for years. Then, when I went to the dark side and purchased a MacBook for work in the field, I became enamoured with its Notes app. Being able to store graphics was an important feature. However, I soon felt limited. Since I didn't fall head-first into the entire Apple eco system, I was unable to sync everything between my Linux box, the Apfel and the Droid Fone. But then I discovered Joplin! After doing some additional fiddling with my self-hosted Nextcloud server setup, I was eventually able to experience my Holy Grail of syncing between the various devices. Haven't looked back since. Although it scared me at first,I don't even mind writing in markdown any longer!

Hey,

Joplin has become my main tool for taking notes.
It’s great, & since hosted on nextcloud, I used it on desktop & phones.
I use also Simplenote for a shared account with my wife.

thanks for sharing [toc] & references to others notes.
and yes, this last feature also (or of course ?) works under Linux.

I agree that having so many columns to work with is a hassle… especially on one monitor where I often have Joplin split-screen with a browser or IDE.

I do like how the layout toggle works for editing/viewing notes, so I think my ideal overall layout would be to simply move the notebooks column to a row on the top.

I don't get that. I want to see a list of notes / notebooks. If either of these columns is moved to the top and replaced by a row, you can only see 1 or 2 notes/notebooks. For me that would be useless.

I don’t get why you’d only see 2? A row of notebooks across the top, you could probably see 6-12 depending on the length of the names.

I am just wanting a way to freely navigate around without having to see 3 or 4 columns. Unless in a dedicated full screen, even 3 columns can be really crammed.

Anyway I am really impressed with Joplin overall. This is just a minor annoyance.

Point taken. I try to avoid displaying the notebooks column whenever possible for the reasons listed above… so I don’t use sub-notebooks at all. Instead, I have somewhat broad notebook categories and I name my individual notes in a way that I can easily find them.

Still experimenting, but having more than 2 columns displayed makes it difficult to use for my needs.

I use typora as an external Editor on Mac and Win10 Works like a charm and has a mix of layouted text and Tags that appear when you need to see them.

I have been using BoostNote, then boostnote.next for a few years. Now the legacy is discontinued, and the .next version is pushing heavily and constantly for paid cloud storage, I have been looking for alternatives.

Joplin seems to have much of it:

tree-like organization which can be re-arranged simply
keyboard oriented workflow
copy/paste
actual support for dropbox through integration instead of working on file level
android support
export of entire tree structure

There are some things I will miss dealry on the way out:

Adinmotion markdown (for "NOTE", "WARNING" etc sections
better themes

Think I will stay with Joplin. It would be awesome to have a simple boostnote.next ==> Joplin import.

joplin is highly customizable with css. you can check out some examples here: Share your CSS. the last post has note and warning boxes in the rendered view which might be useful to you.

you can quickly access the css files by going to settings > appearance > show advance settings. then you can paste the code there. or if you want to make a small change, you can toggle development tools under help, to look for the names of elements etc. (you need to restart the app to apply changes, more info at https://joplinapp.org/ under custom css section).

By reading this idea I got interested! It seems that it is already possible to do so. See: Linking to Zotero items and collections from Org mode – Org mode Exocortex

You can configure zutilo plugin in zotero in order to create zotero link or zotero.org links. Here on archlinux, I have to configure zotero protocole here in archlinux but zotero.org links works out of the box.
