Any idea when the beta version of the Android app will be released on the Play store? I know I can side-load the APK, but I don't do that kind of thing on my "production" phone.

I'm not sure because there have been a lot of changes lately on it, and there will be more, and I prefer to leave it out as beta for some times to make sure we don't miss any big issue.
In terms of security, the APK is safe - if it's been tampered with it won't load anyway. In terms of features it's also relatively safe and if there's any regression on a pre-release we generally try to get it fixed as soon as possible.
