I talked with @laurent22. It seems that

- we used to use `electron-builder`'s auto-update service, but disabled it due to bugs (see [commit](https://github.com/laurent22/joplin/commit/af82345eb8f8d50263ec8108f9dacd966b10a3ee) and [commit](https://github.com/laurent22/joplin/commit/0317171097e792fcdd3c243ac140f76ca7893164)),
- Joplin might migrate away from `electron-builder` to [electron-forge](https://www.electronforge.io/) at some point in the future.

As such, it seems that Electron's [`autoUpdater`](https://www.electronjs.org/docs/latest/api/auto-updater) is probably a better choice.

> If there's an open issue for this I'd be happy to work on a PR!

I've created an issue for this [Support auto-update · Issue #8958 · laurent22/joplin · GitHub](https://github.com/laurent22/joplin/issues/8958).
