I've created this issue about it. If you've been affected by this problem feel free to let me know if there's something more you think the app should do to make it clearer what the problem is and how to solve it:

Users who get this message often get confused:
> In order to synchronise, pleas… e upgrade your application to version 3.7.0+
Context: https://discourse.joplinapp.org/t/synch-requires-3-7-0-but-3-6-15-is-the-latest/50249
We should improve it this way:
- Display the orange warning banner at the top of the screen
- With a message "Please upgrade your application to version X: Download it from Y"
"Y" should be very specific, with a CTA link when possible:
- If it's a pre-release:
- On Android: Link to the joplin-android tag page: https://github.com/laurent22/joplin-android/tags
- On iOS: Please check what needs to be done (maybe nothing if new TestFlight releases are automatically downloaded?)
- On Desktop: Link to https://github.com/laurent22/joplin/releases Additionally, for Linux add a message "or update it using your package manager" (because we don't know how they installed it)
- If it's a regular release:
- On Android: Update from Google Play
- On iOS: Update from Apple Store
- On Desktop: Is possible a link "Check for updates" that does the normal flow to check for updates
