Questions about Joplin and Reminder Apps in General (advice needed)

Hi everyone,

I am trying to find the best app that is an alternative to the IOS reminders app. I tried Wunderlist but there was no way to make my phone vibrate and I keep the ringer off all the time.

I need a reminder app that will do the following:

Vibrate on IOS when there is a reminder (with ringer off)

Not require cloud services (so that I can control my data).

Ideally, sync with laptop though firewire-USB cable (the one for charging the iPhone) so no wireless is involved.

Or if not, sync with wifi switched on.

Dictate voice reminders (without saying ‘hey siri’ but clicking a microphone button instead)

Please let me know if Joplin meets (any or more) of these requirements, I’m sure its other features are very useful (e.g. open source) too but the above requirements are the basics essentials.

If these are not available it would be very much appreciated if you could suggest an app you know has these features,

Hi and welcome on this forum. I don't think Joplin does everything you need but maybe the best for you is to give it a try. Specifically:

Vibrate on IOS when there is a reminder (with ringer off)

There are reminders but not sure if they vibrate as I don't have an iOS device to test.

Not require cloud services (so that I can control my data).

You will need a cloud service for iOS, either Dropbox, OneDrive, any NextCloud provider or you can setup your own server.

Ideally, sync with laptop though firewire-USB cable (the one for charging the iPhone) so no wireless is involved.
Or if not, sync with wifi switched on.

Sync via wifi will work, but again via a cloud provider.

This is not currently supported.

Im trying to understand the end to end encryption component with the cloud services. I thought end to end encryption was for messaging apps, where each “end” is the users device. Doesn’t end to end encryption with a cloud server mean the server has the other key?

And you would be communicating with your own account on that server… confused :s

Or! (new theory) Is it that your other device you are syncing with is the other “end” and cloud just sees encrypted data?

End to end means the data is encrypted between the moment it leaves your device till the moment it reaches the other device. Implementation details aside, the “key” really is the password you use to encrypt your master key. Only you know this password so only you can decrypt the data - the server will not be able to read the data.

Got it, so in this case end to end means, my device to my other device(s).
