### What issue do you have?

I use lists with indents in the Markdown editor, which I organize in groups with empty lines in between. Now when I start a new line with Enter, Joplin randomly inserts empty lines between the old and new lines. This is extremely annoying. I tried to find an entry about this in the forum. Either I didn't search properly or no one has yet recognized this behavior as a problem and reported it. Up until the previous version, Joblin did exactly what I wanted: Enter made a new line without any independent interpretation of whether or not there should be a blank line. How can I change the behavior again or is this a bug?

I find that annoying too but it looks there's no easy fix for now. The issue is tracked here:

> Probably the editor tries to guess how many newlines there should be and incorrectly does so. I think we should reduce how much magic happens when typing in this editor unless we are 100% sure this is what the user will want. So pressing Enter should add one newline in almost all cases.
>
> There are many other such strange behaviours when I use the editor. For example at some point it displayed my bullet point as code even though it wasn't wrapped in backticks. Cursor was also randomly moving to the next bullet point. But unfortunately I cannot consistently replicate this. But the idea is to make the editor less smart and more predictable.

Yes, that's right, that's exactly my problem. Thanks for the reply.
I'm saddened that the problem has been known for so long. I would like to make a general comment at this point that this is a really big problem for me. I use Joplin because I want to decide for myself what happens and not have the program decide for me. If I want a blank line, I just press Enter twice.

Be aware that it's possible to disable list continuation entirely (settings \> note \> advanced, disable "autocomplete Markdown and HTML"):

 ![screenshot: Advanced note settings, autocomplete](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex028/uploads/cozic/original/3X/f/3/f337b2d54ec2707cfd27e1eef61004cdc15cedc4.jpeg)

The setting should be available in Joplin \>= v3.2, which is currently in pre-release.

**Edited** : Replaced mobile app screenshot with a desktop app screenshot.

Thanks, that's something to think about – but that would disable all auto-completion, which isn't really the intention.

Until this issue is resolved, you could use the seemingly unaffected legacy Markdown editor as a workaround: `Tools` \> `Options` \> `General` \> `Show Advanced Settings` \> Check `Use the legacy Markdown editor`

That was a very helpful tip that made my daily work with Joplin a little more bearable. Thank you so much!
