Managing profiles and syncing between desktop and mobile: best practice?

What issue do you have?

Status quo desktop (macOS): 2 profiles:

  1. Default (which appears to have been corrupted)
  2. New (the result of exporting the contents of Default and re-importing)

Status quo mobile (iOS): 1 profile, Default, which has been syncing via Dropbox

My collection of notes is large (2.5GB) so I'm planning to delete/empty the Default profile and just use the new one.

What's the most efficient/safe sequence of steps for handling that transition in terms of syncing with iOS and deleting the contents of the Default profile?

Should I, for example, delete the contents of my desktop Default profile and then sync that with my phone (so there's an empty Default at both ends) before attempting to sync the new profile?

Did you wipe the sync target before you imported the data on your desktop profile? Providing you did that and the new profile is now fully synced, that one should be a 'good' profile now.

If you used the same Dropbox account, personally I'd say you should uninstall Joplin on iOS and reinstall it so you have a fresh default profile, so the old profile does not interfere with the sync on the updated sync target. If however you used a separate Dropbox account for the new profile, I'd say you can create a new profile on iOS and sync with that. Then delete (reset) the default profile once the new one is working. It doesn't particularly matter if you're not using the default profile, and separate profiles with different accounts means you have a working set of notes to go back to in the interim, in case anything went wrong.
