What issue do you have?

Installed the cockpit plugin this morning

System became very laggy, and now can not disable or uninstall it.

How do i remove this?

Got rid of it with a manual plugin folder delete

Seems that broke something else slightly but a minor annoyance compared to having this on my system. No doubt unintentional but for me effectively malware

Hi @plutoBase, I'm the author of Cockpit. I'm sorry it did this to your Joplin, and thank you for reporting it while it was happening.

It's a bug in Cockpit, and it gets worse the bigger the collection. By default the panel lists every note along with the to-dos. It fetches them through Joplin's search API 100 at a time, and Joplin runs the whole search again for each batch. On a large collection that takes minutes, it runs inside Joplin's main window, and Cockpit repeats it every minute. That's why Joplin froze and then stayed slow. I'm working on a fix so it no longer reads the whole collection.

Why you couldn't remove it: disabling or deleting a plugin in Settings → Plugins only takes effect after a restart, and the frozen window didn't let you get that far. For any plugin that hangs Joplin, there's a built-in way out:

  • Help → Toggle safe mode restarts Joplin with all plugins switched off. Disable or delete the plugin in Settings → Plugins, then click "Disable safe mode and restart" in the banner at the top.
  • If Joplin shows a "Window unresponsive" message, its Restart in safe mode button does the same.
  • If nothing responds, close Joplin and create an empty file named force-safe-mode-on-next-start in C:\Users\<you>\.config\joplin-desktop. Joplin starts in safe mode next time.

Deleting the plugin file was fine too. Cockpit doesn't change your notes by itself (only when you tick, move or edit something in its panel), so your notes are as they were. About "broke something else": if your other plugins disappeared, the whole plugins folder was probably deleted. Reinstalling them from Settings → Plugins brings them back with their settings. If it's something else, tell me what you see and I'll help.

One question, if you don't mind: roughly how many notes do you have? Note Statistics shows the total. I'd like to test the fix at that size. I'll post here when it's released. There's no need to reinstall anything for me.

Thanks. Picked the wrong time to start experimenting at the start of the day and caused me some problems first thing! But quickly fixed.

As for your question I have around 19.5k notes. Hope you can find a fix; installed this cos it looked a useful plugin!

@plutoBase a follow-up: Cockpit 2.6.3 is out and fixes this.

I reproduced it on a 20,000-note test collection. 2.6.2 kept Joplin busy for minutes and never finished drawing the panel; 2.6.3 shows it in about 8 seconds and Joplin stays responsive. The cause: Cockpit read every note through Joplin's search, which redoes the whole search for every 100 results. It now reads Joplin's plain note list and shows the 1,000 most recently updated notes, with a "show more" at the end. Search still covers every note, and to-dos are never capped.

Thanks again for reporting it. No need to try it again on your side, but if you ever do, I'd be glad to hear how it behaves on your collection.

Tyvm, @pmslava , will give this a spin over the weekend!
